New models boast more power and heartier designs
New models are taking corded drills into new territory, with more power, better balance and helpful features. Contractor’s Tool Source editors asked leading drill makers about what’s new and here’s what the companies that responded report:
DeWalt In 2009, DeWalt introduced two new 1/2" hammer drills with a DeWalt-designed motor that packs 40 percent more copper for up to 50 percent more power, says Mike McDowell, DeWalt group product manager for corded drill products. It’s also introduced a new right-angle drill with stall-sensing technology for greater user safety and comfort. The DWD 520K a pistol grip and DWD525K mid-handle hammer drills are 10-amp tools that provide users with more torque and faster drilling. The mid-handle design balances the tool’s weight for better user comfort. Both tools feature a reversible second handle that improves tool control and can lock in any position. For more traditional operators, the DWD520K model has a familiar pistol grip design, but uses the same reversible second handle for greater control. The tools have an intuitive mode collar selector that sets the drill speed and torque for wood or metal drilling; small-diameter, low-torque drilling; or hammer drilling. The drills also have a soft-grip handle for user comfort. The DWD460 1/2" stud and joist drill features an 11 amp motor that delivers 40 percent more power and 30 percent greater drilling performance, McDowell says. It has a two-speed gearbox and variable speed control that allows the user to match the drilling speed to the job at hand. Its stall-sensing technology reduces tool torque if the bit binds up for better tool control. To reactivate the tool, the user works the trigger and it continues to drill at full torque. A mechanical clutch in low speed protects the gearing and the all-metal housing adds durability to the tool. The tool is comfortable to use. Its anti-slip soft grip, multi-position bail handle with knuckle guard and two-position side handle aids control.
Makita Makita has also improved its line of right-angle drills for hole drilling in plumbing and electrical applications, says Joe Soto, Makita’s product manager for residential construction and pneumatics. “The three models – DA4031, DA4000LR and DA6300 – are built specifically to stand up to the demanding work in plumbing and electrical trades,” he says. The DA4031 reversible drill has a 10 amp motor and 300/1,200 rpm speeds. In low, a torque limiter disengages the motor if the bit binds. The rocker-type reversing switch makes drive reversal a simple one-handed operation. The large side handle adds drilling control.
Milwaukee Milwaukee will soon introduce a new model 0240-20 3/8" drill that features an all-metal jampot gear case for greater durability — a first for 3/8" drills in this price range, says Melissa Marineau, Milwaukee group product manager for corded tools. “Other 3/8" drills in this price range use a clamshell plastic housing. The tool’s all-metal gear case adds rigidity and greater support for the gears, resulting in increased performance and greater durability.” It has an 8 amp motor and 0 to 2,800 rpm drill speed.
Bosch Bosch Power Tools and Accessories introduces the 1006VSR 3/8" drill that it claims delivers everything a great corded drill should in a lighter, more ergonomic and more powerful package. It has a 6.3 amp motor and variable speed up to 2,600 rpm. The tool weighs only 3.4 lbs., offering the best power-to-weight ratio in its class, Bosch sources report. It features a 3/8" keyless chuck for quick and easy accessory changes and a recessed lock-on switch to prevent accidental lock-on. A belt clip frees up hands for other tasks.
